( This is cross-posted in a couple related tribes, to hopefully inspire perspectives from many different people. )

After years of having numerous friends, acquaintances and other people suggest I write a book(s) at least about some of my specific life experiences, their advice is taking hold in me.

So recently I've started reading books about writing non-fiction books & articles, and very recently to just put some rough thoughts down onto paper.
Am experiencing some indecisiveness about how personal & specific I want to be about some things and people, in consideration of actually publishing it for anyone to read. In deference to my own & others privacy as well as simple readability.

Anyone here have experience writing & publishing autobiographical books or articles? I would love to learn of different peoples' experiences & choices in choosing what to print & what to keep private, as well as how you crafted a truthful, biographical experience into a creative & pleasureably readable story?

Also, does anyone know of friendly, mixed level writing / writers groups, gatherings or informal get-togethers ( even if simply sharing company with one other writer for inspiration & empathy occasionally ) in the San Francisco east bay area, or surrounding areas,, where a newbie writer like myself would be welcome.?

How do I get to design and layout books?

Do I need an "in" with someone? I've done two independently published books, love the process, and have a mind for the details that go into that scale of a print job. I love books and I love design. I make my living as an independent designer for mostly small (and some big) companies and organizations around the Bay Area.

I don't understand why so many publishers have the outsides and insides of books designed to two different people who apprently aren't allowed to speak to one another. (Thus creating lots of beautiful, smart covers and beautiful, smart interiors that don't really go together.) I know that there are places out there that hire one designer (or one group of communicating designers) for the entire package which I think seems to work better. Anway, back to the point...

My question is: how do I present myself to these publishers as someone they can hire to design and lay out books? (Any kind of books, novel, non-fiction, coffe-table books.) It's not as though I think there's lots of money in publishing (I hear there isn't!) but I'm always striving to have diverse projects and diverse clients. Without the proven experience, how do I communicate to them that I understand how to take direction, I'm easy to work with, and I want this to be part of my repertoir? Should I send them samples of my other work? Just a résumé? A letter of interest? A little brochure? Who are they? Do I need to be formal? (I tend to operate on a very friendly, personal and conversational level with all of my clients, but I can do formal! I've been there!)

Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I just finished a huge chunk of work and so am spending a little time over the next few weeks figuring out how to try and track down exciting new projects. This is one avenue in which I have a great interest. My site for reference: www.mollymccoy.com

Many thanks,

I am trying to line up distribution locations around town so that my readers can pick up the publication and I come accross a common objection that potential distributors give me: " I don't want to promote my competitors' advertising in my location.."

Does anyone have a solid argument against that?? My paper is a health and fitness publication being distributed in gyms, massage therapists , physiotherapist offices, yoga/pilates studios etc... so what Ii tell them is that people are already coming to your location, they are not going to go elsewhere as they are already members of your facility.

Any other creative arguments?

thanks,

Alok

Please check out this link:

http://freecollege.blogspot.com/

The link will bring you to a "blog community" that I am trying to
start. The intention is for the participants to speak from their truth
regarding common themes that we may often think about such as: one's
work vs. one's calling, individual endeavors vs. ethical
responsibilities based on family or your values, the artist's vision
vs. general uniformity. I am hoping that these "themes" will have a
life of their own based on the nature of inquiry, wanting to know
something because you are led to it!

I created the blog to try and create a sort of "free college" for
those who are through with school (or not), and those who would like
to browse through the thoughts of others to join in "equal inquiry"
(that means being open to others' different points of view with the
goal of many ways of seeing a subject rather than arguing "your side"
of a topic).

Recently, I have felt the need to create this sort of forum for free
expression and different perspectives based on "your truth" from your
opinion, discipline, culture, or interests. In this way, we will be
teaching each other what we know...and it will be free to all!!! No
grades, no judging, and no tuition.

I hope you find it to your interest!

Eddie Ling

PS As of now, this blog is a sort of creative writing journal...come check it out!

The company I work for publishes a very successful line of booklets, but they've only been sold in non-book channels (Target, Wal-Mart, AutoZone, other big boxes). We want to branch out into book and gift channels, but simply do not have a distribution setup to support it (we have only 3 in-house reps, who sell in bulk to big-box stores, and I am not their only, or their most profitable product, so they simply don't have time to develop a book/gift channel strategy. They are really product people who became content people kind of as an afterthought). Reps seem like a bit of a stretch for us right now, distributor seems more likely. What are the right questions to be asking? How do I wrap my head around these questions? I mean, I've working with moderate-sized publishers (Ten Speed, Lonely Planet), but always on the creative/production side, and never had to worry about how you build your sales force. Insights, anyone? I'll buy beers at the next publishing get-together for everyone who has helpful advice!

So I'm applying for production coordinator jobs here & there (anyone want to put a good word in for me at the UC Press or Chronicle?). But all the "creative"/"design" recruiter agencies seem to specialize in marketing/advertising. Does anyone know if local publishing companies use these kinds of agencies, and if so, which ones?

So that leads me to my first question - Is there a trade publication or great website that would list new job opportunities?

My second question refers to my own qualifications. I have the BA in English but don't have any work experience in this field. I have, however, proven myself to be a thoughtful and resonsible worker in other fields. Is my best option, therefore, to try and find a position as a part-time intern? I'd be very happy to do this.

Are there houses who are particularly friendly towards newbies or ones who regularly run internships? Do internships often lead to a permenant position as an editorial assistant or does it usually take more than one go?

Is there something I could do to make myslef stand out from the crowd, something that would make me more desirable for an internship or even an entry-level position?

Any help or advice you could give me would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Anyway, let's get together for a beverage, a slice, and some chat about publishing, writing, editing, graphic design . . . whatever. One clever group member suggested Lanesplitter (we're giving up on Jupiter because it's just too dang loud).

It's at 4799 Telegraph Ave in Oakland (don't accidentally go to one of the other Lanesplitters, like the better-known one on San Pablo). Relatively close to MacArthur BART, and parking is easy.

RSVPs not necessary, but it would be nice to hear from folks, just to get a sense of who's coming and alleviate my party anxiety. So, to reiterate:
I'm fairly new to this tribe... Let me tell you a teensy weensy bit about myself (rest is in my profile).

I live in East Bay, in Walnut Creek. I've been busy writing up my resume and going through craigslist for jobs myself as well. My last Contract gig was with Peoplesoft (I wished Contra costa times would stop printing series of stories about them it depressing me!). I'm looking to get into project management and having difficulty getting my foot in the door.

But also, I'm an aspiring writer as well. San Francisco's been a great place to flex creative muscle. I've been to great queer related readings, performances and the like. There are so many different shades of likenesses for everyone I think.

What are the meets for generally? Is it for networking or talk about self publishing?
Hi. I am having a kidney transplant done on March 11 at UCSF, and am in need of a few pints of B positive blood donated to me.
I'm an only child, so no close kin are around.

You just need to be HIV/AIDs negative (clean)...other than that, male or female, etc, I could really use one pint of your blood.

Please share this with your friends...just a few pints will help me a lot, as there is a blood shortage going on!!! Glad to send you my name and the UCSF contact info. THANK YOU. (Prayers and good thoughts appreciated too!)

Thursday has the advantage of not being a "date night," plus bars tend to be quieter, more condusive to conversation. On the other hand . . .

Friday is not a school night, and some folks have said they'd like to meet, network, and then still be able to go to their regularly scheduled Friday amusements.

Thoughts? Default will be Thursday, Feb 3, and there will be **lots** of advance notice this time, but let me know if Friday Feb 4 sounds better . . .

And for those who've asked, next West Bay would then be 1st week of March, probably at Zeitgeist.

So, sorry to start out with a downer but, well, it's on my mind. On to the upbeat bit. Shall we get together for a drink next Thursday? That would be the 5th. I think we need somewhere more condusive to conversation than 111 Minna, but equally close to BART. I always think Zeitgeist, but it's really not that close to BART. Let's just say now taking suggestions (Jay, you organize events frequently, any brilliant thoughts? Not to put you on the spot or anything . . .), and I'll announce fo' sho' on Monday.

So, this came up at my work and we word nerds are still wrangling with it. Basically, the product dept. had some marketing copy that said something like "this pint-size product includes . . ." Raising this issue . . . is it "pint-size" or "pint-sized"? We all agreed that "sized" sounded better to our ears, but could come up with no back-up or cognate case to really make a firm ruling.

I mean, I have a queen-size bed. It's not a queen-sized bed. The latter would seem imply that it's the size of a specific queen (Victoria? Truman Capote?). Does "pint-sized" then imply that the thing referenced has to be 16-ounces? And so "pint-size" would be used colloquially for something small but not specifically the size of a pint? Obviouslly we're sort of making these rules up, but it does seem as though one could come up with a useable set of guidelines. And how does that PJ Harvey song "Man-Size" fit in anyway?

Come to my party this Saturday, have a pint, and prepare for drunken debate. Or just have a pint and a burger. Like how I worked the party invite in there? Man am I relentless. I'm one of those people who kinda hates the idea of throwing parties because I worry irrationally and vigorously that no one will show up . . . but as soon as the first few folks do I can relax and reclaim my natural role as life of said party which I am now suddenly enjoying. So all you have to do is show up and I'll be a happy gal!

Oh My God...I just have to rant...I just got a call from an author of a book that's currently being copyedited. The author is a stereotypical New York shrink, with the nasal voice, the manic behavior, the fast talking, etc. She has implied many times as we worked on her book together that the west coast is unsophisticated. Her book was terribly written and organized from the start, so I worked with her twice as long as I do with normal manuscripts. It's still bad, but my company has made the decision to go ahead and publish it.

The author got the copyedits yesterday, and the copyeditor called for her to use "layperson's" language (the author is a psychotherapist and researcher but the book is targeted to normal, run-of-the-mill people.) The author called me up to say that in Portland, Oregon (I'm in Oakland, but anyway...), laypeople's language is different that it would be in New York City. Later she said New York is just more sophisticated than the west coast and if she were to use "west coast" laypeople's language in her book the way the copyeditor suggests, she'd be a laughing stock in NYC. This book is supposed to help people all over the place deal with the loss of a spouse. It's not meant to be marketed only to intellectuals in NYC.

My mouth literally fell open in disbelief and I had to hang up the phone rather than continue listening to her message. That's quite possibly one of the most offensive, untrue, snobbish things I've ever heard on the job. Have any of you other bay area publishing folk come up against this attitude? Any suggestions? I'm supposed to call her back but I'm so offended I don't trust myself to behave professionally with her.

Where do New Yawkers get off considering us dumb, unsophisticated hicks? Man, I'm pissed off. Grrrrrrr.

So, I say we reinstate the First Thursday Pub(lishing) Group on Thursday, May 6, at 111 Minna in San Francisco. What's a reasonable start time? 8? (Allows for BARTing or parking, etc.) Or should it be earlier given that who really wants to go home after work just to dash right back? Maybe 7? Post your votes, and I'll do a proper invite tomorrow . . .

hey there folks,

i used to put together a magazine in another city at another time. i am looking to do so again in this city.

therefore i am looking for any contact info or recommendations i can be given.

what i am figuring to be up my alley is:

printers who won't blink at all kinds of "adult" content and will do print runs of 1000 copies and up. i am looking for ones that will do black and white, spot color, and full color (not necessarily all the same places).

a mentor who has produced something here before. (it doesn't need to have been sex related, but the person(s) must be sex and perv and queer positive or at least tolerant)

good books on producing it all at home.

recommendations on a beginner course for Quark which doesn't assume i've never seen a computer before. and doesn't cost a fortune. i may not be doing the design but i want to know basically what is happening with the person who is.

a good photoshop book or course. or recommendations on other programs that might work better.

recommendations on digital cameras and scanners.

good places to find model releases. and all other releases.

recommendations on doing consignment to stores in the area (like which ones take consignment, what the going rate is on the percentage of retail price the store takes, who has high sales for unusual "adult" magazines, etc.)

this is very likely to be a paper venture (since that is my love) so tips and recommendations on prepping a paper magazine for the printer are absolutely needed and appreciated. when i used to do it we had service bureaus so i have alot to learn.

also, recommendations on good smaller distribution companies that handle magazines of unusual "adult" nature are also appreciated.

you can contact me with a message or you can share here for others who might wanna know.

thanks for anything offered. i have alot to learn and refamilirize myself with but it's time.

It's been a long time . . . too long. For a goodly number of years, a bunch of publishing folks (and friends and strangers . . . we weren't fussy as long as you loved books, magazines, heck we'll even hobnob with literate websters) used to meet on the first Thursday of every month to have some beers, share industry gossip, and revel in the company of folks who understand how vitally important the series comma is to Western civilization. And sometimes arm-wrestle (bring it on Grasshopper . . . I've been going to the gym . . . occasionally . . .)

So, a few questions:

1. If we revived this event, would you come? Just trying to get a feel for headcount. This is NOT a sponsored event--you buy your own darn drinks. Just so's ya know.

2. East Bay, West Bay, or alternating? Any votes for North or South Bay while we're at it? We used to alternate between Jupiter in Berkeley and Zeitgeist in SF. Only problem with the Geist is it's not super near BART. And Wade got his bike stolen that one time. But in general, I think most agree that Geist is good, though I'm totally open to suggestion of other venues. What's near BART but not too small and/or yupified?

3. Should I create a "social" list separate from the jobs list on my Yaho group? I know that some folks have unsubscribed from the jobs list because they were really more interested in the get-together. Whadda y'all think?

I have a lovely cohostess (yay! Thank Stephanie!) and hope to have a plan next week, maybe schedule the first meeting for May 6, unless for some reason peeps think the first Thursday dealie is non-good. (Doesn't conflict with Death Guild, Sin, Nocturnia, BAGG, Voodoo, New Wave City, or Necro. Does with 1984 but really, I think we can live with that.)

Let me know your thoughts! Sorry if this is a slightly incoherent missive but it's been a long goddamn week, and it's only Wednesday . . .
There is a guarantee of no poems about trees, birds, his parents, sexual abuse, or September 11, but lots of poetry about the Tenderloin, sex, booze, drugs, and crazy visions.

I sift through the useless bullshit published in Poetry and other assorted literary journals and pray to find anything this fresh, rebellious, psychotic, glorious and completely insane.
